Last year, Macy’s made a drastic decision to close 150 stores by 2025. It is a move that is part of a restructuring plan, designed to ensure the brand’s long-term viability. This change in its operation aims to optimize the company’s resources and focus on the most profitable locations. With a goal of reducing its presence to approximately 350 retail locations by 2026, the company is betting on a more digital-centric business model.
The real reason behind the closures
The company has indicated that the stores that will be closing their doors are those where they have not demonstrated the performance to remain in operation. Macy’s CEO, Tony Springs, stated that while closing stores is always a complicated process, the locations selected did not meet the profitability targets imposed. This strategy, framed under the “A Bold New Chapter” plan, seeks to reconfigure the chain’s approach to a more selective market. In addition, they are targeting customers with higher purchasing power, offering premium brand products.
Although the closure of Macy’s stores may be seen as a sign of difficulties, analysts say otherwise. As they explained, this strategy is mostly about adapting quickly to new retail trends. However, the market sees it differently, as the brand’s shares have suffered a 15% drop, underscoring the need for an urgent transformation. But the company is confident that this change in strategy will allow for a sustainable recovery and a strengthening of its brand in the near future.
