The difficult economic outlook in the United States is having a direct impact on the retail sector. Thus, two major retailers have announced the closure of their stores by early 2025: Macy’s and Kohl’s. Through an official press release from both companies, they announced that numerous stores will be out of service.
Macy’s will close more than 60 stores in the United States.
Macy’s, based in New York, will close 66 stores in 24 states as part of its “Bold new chapter” strategy. As explained, this consists of closing “dead-end” stores.
The new strategy, initially announced in 2024, aims to return the company to profitable and sustainable sales growth. In a press release last week, the company said it plans to close about 150 underperforming stores in about three years.
“Closing a store is never easy, but as part of our ‘Bold New Chapter‘ strategy, we are closing underperforming stores to allow us to focus our resources,” said Tony spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, Inc . He stressed that with this plan we intend to prioritize investments in our best stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and increased service.”
