The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) of the United States has detailed on its official website that there will be a new dollar in circulation. In that space it indicated which will be the next banknote and the details that this new redesign will contain. It is a new specimen that seeks to improve its security and make counterfeiting more difficult.
Thus, the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence Steering Committee (ACD) has set the first denomination to be redesigned according to the official schedule. It also detailed the date when the issuance of this new dollar bill will begin.
What will be the denomination of the next dollar bill to enter into circulation?
The Government informed that the main purpose of this redesign is to avoid problems related to counterfeiting. For them, the banknotes must be resistant to counterfeiting attacks, which are becoming more and more sophisticated. For this reason, a detailed schedule for the redesign has been created and, as stipulated, the first denomination to be renewed will be the $10 bill, which will start to be issued in 2026.
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is aware that modern technology allows for higher quality counterfeits. In view of this, new functions have been developed, closely linked and integrated to a new design, with which it intends to face this threat. The authorities explained that all this requires a rather complex and time-consuming process. Multiple tests have to be carried out, modifications have to be analyzed and the necessary equipment has to be acquired.
What will happen to the current banknote when the new one is issued?
It is essential for the Government to ensure that the U.S. currency issued by the Federal Reserve does not lose its face value under any circumstances. For this reason, the current circulating 10-dollar bills will continue to be used as normal.
This is a policy used by the authorities in which they establish that all currency designs will remain legal tender, regardless of their issuance. This strategy includes all Federal Reserve bill denominations, from 1914 to the present, according to the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
It should be noted that there is one circumstance that may cause the banknotes to go out of circulation. The dollar bill will cease to be used only when the specimens are damaged. However, in that case, they must be exchanged for new ones and removed from the system.
Denominations of the next banknotes to be issued
The Government established a redesign schedule that has first the 10-dollar bill, which will begin to be issued in 2026. Then, it will follow with the issues of these denominations:
- USD 50 (2028)
- USD 20 (2030)
- USD 5 (2032)
- USD 100 (2034)
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing’s priority puts the primary focus on the most widely used specimens. “The sequence addresses risk mitigation and counterfeiting concerns,” government officials reported on these dollar bill redesign strategies.
100-dollar bill withdrawal confirmed
The U.S. Federal Reserve has confirmed the withdrawal of the $100 bill. This is a measure that caused great uncertainty both in the public and in the markets. According to the information provided, the withdrawal will be for notes issued up to 1969 and will be valid only until 2034.
For this reason, the authorities recommend exchanging the issues for new ones. This is done through the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, under the Treasury Department. To do so, there are two methods available:
- Mailing: the old copies can be sent together with the bank account information. In this way, the corresponding transfer will be made from the state entity.
- Delivery in person: it is possible to exchange the banknotes directly through the physical offices of the BEP, open from Monday to Friday.
