GM, the American company known for manufacturing cars, trucks, and engines under brands such as Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Saab, Hummer, and Saturn, has announced a recall of 461,839 trucks and SUVs equipped with Duramax turbo-diesel engines. The decision stems from rear-wheel lockups caused by transmission valve failures. The vehicles affected by this recall were manufactured between 2020 and 2022 and include models with the 3.0-liter Duramax I6 or 6.6-liter V8 engines.
The list of recalled vehicles starts with Chevrolet Silverado models
The first on the recall list are the 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado models 1500, 2500, and 3500. Alongside these are the GMC Sierra models 1500 to 3500, which share similar mechanics, as well as the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. These vehicles were manufactured starting January 28, 2019, for the Silverado 2500 and 3500 models and in 2021 for the Silverado 1500.
The issue was first reported on June 5, 2024, when an engineer investigated a claim involving a 2021 GMC Sierra 2500 experiencing rear-wheel lockup while towing, causing damage to the vehicle. Upon inspection, it was determined that excessive wear in one of the control valves could lead to such incidents.
NHTSA notification and GM’s response
In late July 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notified GM with several recall reports. Over the following two months, GM identified approximately 1,888 related reports of rear-wheel lockups. To address these issues, GM plans to install updated transmission control module software in the affected vehicles.
The new software, already implemented in 2022 models, monitors valve performance and can detect potential issues up to 10,000 miles before a lockup occurs. This update is expected to mitigate risks and improve safety for the recalled vehicles.
