The U.S. Government has confirmed the future launch of a redesign for the $50 bill. This is aimed at improving the security of the national currency. As part of this strategy, specific timelines were established to update the different denominations. In view of this, some doubts arose, such as: When will these issues begin to circulate and what to do with the old ones?
From the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) explained that the redesign of the $50 bill is to meet the currency’s own needs. “Federal Reserve bills are a global reserve currency that must meet broad and unique needs,” they specified.
New $50 bill: when will it enter into circulation?
The task of redesigning the currency falls to the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence Directive Commission (ADC). The ADC has published an official schedule with the details for the issuance of new banknotes. According to the schedule, the USD 50 bill will enter circulation from 2028, thus being one of the first denominations to be renewed.
“The banknotes must be highly resistant to increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting attacks,” said the authorities. In that sense, they pointed out that the main objective for the redesign of the specimens is security, so its new version will have tools to avoid this problem.
What will happen to the current banknotes
It should be noted that the current 50-dollar bills will not be withdrawn from circulation. They will continue to be suitable for transactions, i.e., they will continue to be legal tender. According to official information, citizens will only have to replace those with evident deterioration, since many commercial establishments decided not to receive this type of bills.
“It is U.S. Government policy that all redesigns of U.S. currency remain legal tender, regardless of when they were issued. This policy includes all Federal Reserve bill denominations from 1914 to the present,” the BEP states.
Timeline for the issuance of other banknotes
The schedule established for the launch of new bills also includes other denominations. However, not all of them will have the same issue date. Here is the launching year of each one of them:
- USD 10: 2026
- USD 20: 2030
- USD 5: 2032
- USD 100: 2034
New 100 dollar bill
As can be seen, the 100 dollar bill will also have its redesign, although it will be the last of the current calendar to enter into circulation. This is because its planning is the most recent and this process is quite time-consuming. Specifically, it takes more than a decade for its research and development to successfully implement this currency. And to this, several years of optimization and integration testing must be added.
Will its design change?
For the moment, there is nothing confirmed about the design of the new $100 bill that the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing is working on. Likewise, we will have to wait to know if the image on the front or back of this issue will remain the same or will have some changes. Let us remember that the hero of this bill is none other than Benjamin Franklin, while the $50 bill, which will enter into circulation in 2028, features Ulysses S. Grant.
