Governor Kathy Hochul started 2025 with very good news for the citizens of New York. Recently, she proposed more than 200 very interesting initiatives, but one of them stands out above all: the middle class tax cut. It will also benefit 8.3 million taxpayers earning less than $323,000. The governor assures that this proposal will provide the lowest tax rates in 70 years. “This will save hard-working taxpayers about $1 billion,” she said in a speech last week. According to his vision, this comes to solve the problem of tax overload.
A solution to the tax overload
“We are happy with this. It is something we have always believed in. I think we are overtaxed and, as a result, our cost of living is too high,” said Will Barclay, Assembly Minority Leader. According to him, this scenario has caused people to leave New York in search of less expensive places. For this reason, he stressed the importance of this proposal and described it as a “good policy”.
For his part, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Carl Heastie, spoke about his desire to eliminate the state income tax for low-income households. During a press conference, he was asked if the governor’s proposed reduction would affect his plan and he dismissed that possibility.
“I don’t think it will affect it in any way. The governor mentioned that she wants to do a big tax cut. We feel we want the same thing. At some point, we will sit down and look at the issue. I don’t think it’s a conflict,” he said. And in that regard, he added: “I think if we wanted to go further and implement low-income measures, it would probably be a couple of million dollars more. I don’t think it would be a big problem.
It should be noted that, so far, there is no specific information on this initiative, although in his statement published on the official website of the New York Governor’s Office, he specified that he is in full negotiations with parliamentarians to move forward with the project.
When could the tax cut for the middle class in New York take effect?
This tax relief for the lower classes in New York could take effect during this fiscal year. It will be reflected in the rates that taxpayers pay in each paycheck, bringing immediate relief to every working New Yorker. By reducing rates in five of the state’s nine tax brackets, New Yorkers’ taxes will be reduced to their lowest level in nearly 70 years.
The governor specified that the idea of this initiative is to “make New York more affordable”. According to what she explained in her conference, this is one of her top priorities. “To continue this commitment, I am proposing this substantial tax cut for middle-class New Yorkers to alleviate the burdens of inflation,” she assured.
Child Reimbursement: What does this plan consist of?
In addition to the tax cut, the Governor is proposing New York’s first inflation rebate and a dramatic increase in the child tax credit. Such financial support will benefit more than 2.75 million children worldwide and will double or triple the current credit in many cases. It also offered up to $1,000 per year per child under the age of four and up to $500 per child between the ages of four and 16.
The expanded credit will benefit families across the income spectrum. According to official information, the average credit will increase from $472 to $943 annually. In this direction, much-needed relief will be provided to previously ineligible middle-class families, such as those with four members earning $170,000, who will now receive $500 per month.
As for families with one young child and one school-age child earning up to $110,000, the credit will total $1,500, approximately $1,000 more than the program currently offers.
